The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry aims to cultivate professionals equipped with specialized knowledge in chemistry and biochemistry,enabling them to conduct advanced research in chemistry, biochemistry, and materials chemistry,while nurturing the research and development talent required by related industries.

Positioning and Strategic Directions

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is positioned as an academic unit that places equal emphasis on research and teaching, maintaining a balanced development of fundamental theory and practical applications.

Our research endeavors encompass the traditional fields of organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, while emphasizing the advanced, interdisciplinary integration of biochemistry and nanomaterials chemistry.

In terms of curriculum planning, fundamental courses in traditional chemistry form the core of our educational program, supplemented by coursework in biochemistry and relevant subjects in materials chemistry.

Additionally, the department has established dedicated programs in Biochemistry and Materials Chemistry, aiming to guide students effectively toward acquiring comprehensive and specialized expertise.

Department History and Overview

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is located in the College of Science Building II. Our graduate program first welcomed its inaugural master's cohort in August 1992. The undergraduate program was subsequently approved and commenced enrollment in the fall of 1993, followed by the establishment of the doctoral program in 1995. With undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs fully in place, the department has formed a comprehensive chemical education and scientific research system.

Currently, the department features modern, spacious teaching laboratories for general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry. In addition, we house specialized research laboratories and a shared instrumentation center. All laboratories are outfitted with state-of-the-art safety measures, ventilation, and drainage systems conforming to the highest domestic standards. In terms of equipment, beyond the core instruments supporting coursework, the department is equipped with a wide array of advanced instruments dedicated to cutting-edge research.

The department currently has a strong and well-rounded faculty of 20 members—18 full-time and 2 adjunct professors—all of whom hold doctoral degrees, with an average age in their fifties. Our faculty's research spans the four classical disciplines—organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry—while placing strategic emphasis on nanomaterials chemistry and biochemistry. Each faculty member actively leads at least one research project, guiding both graduate and undergraduate research students in scientific endeavors while fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to pioneer novel research frontiers.
